title
Provide an update to the Public Safety Sales Tax Oversight Committee regarding the Fire Department.
body
Background:
The PSST (Public Safety Sales Tax) directly funds 36% of the Fire Department’s suppression personnel. That correlates to the number of Firefighters required to staff 2 of our 5 fire stations. We are currently in the process of hiring to fill one vacancy and also establishing an eligibility list in preparation for future vacancies. Without those personnel, we would be unable to meet the NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) recommended effective workforce at a structure fire. With 16 personnel on duty every day, the Manteca Fire Department can assemble the minimum recommended workforce within 8 minutes approximately 90% of the time.
As stated in our last update we allocated $200,000 from Measure M reserves to purchase and equip used fire engines to supplement our reserve fleet. As of today we have acquired one of these engines and it has already proved its worth. We also purchased a 2016 Chevy Tahoe from a local fire agency to use as a back-up response vehicle. Our goal is to purchase at least one more used Type 1 Engine within the next 6 months.
