Receive and File 4th of July After Action Report.
body
Background:
The Police Department and Fire Department worked hand in hand this year to present a united front regarding the use of illegal fireworks in Manteca. Through the combined use of a social media campaign, news outlets and word of mouth we were able to reach a greater number of citizens than in previous years. While we were certainly busy, the consensus is that this year was quieter than the previous few years. We received positive feedback from citizens, and many people were deterred from using illegal fireworks out of fear of being caught by a drone. The following information is an overview of July 1st through July 5th.
• Number of administrative citations issued (direct observation) 37
• Number of criminal citations issued 0
• Number of Nail’em app area checks 71
• Number of Nail’em app notifications on July 4th 504
• Number of GO app notifications 28
• Total number of firework-related calls into dispatch 129
• Number of warnings issued (no direct observation) 1
• Number of Fire Prevention Staff assigned to enforcement each night 3
• Number of Firefighters over-hired on July 4th 3
• Number of Police Officers assigned to enforcement each night - Between 4-9
• Number of fires started by fireworks 16
• Number of administrative citations issued from drone footage 6
• One citizen was reported to have been severely injured when a firework exploded on or near his hand causing him to lose his thumb.
This was the second time that Fire and Police have worked so closely to jointly attack the problem of illegal fireworks. Over the last decade, widespread use of illegal fireworks has drastically increased, bringing with it more fires, injuries, and noise complaints. Further study of this year’s procedures will be used to improve our response next year.
