Background:

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the announcement of the end of slavery in the United States, specifically when Union Major General Gordon Granger declared all enslaved people in Texas free in 1865. Officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth honors African American freedom and achievements. Celebrations include parades, cultural festivals, historical reenactments, and traditional foods, fostering cultural appreciation and educational discussions on the history of slavery and civil rights. The holiday promotes reflection, understanding, and a commitment to equality and justice for all.

Gwendolyn Grace along with members of the community will be accepting the Proclamation.

Fiscal Impact:

None.
