Background:
The City of Manteca Solid Waste Division hosted a recycling art contest in the fall of 2025 where students from various Manteca elementary schools had the opportunity to submit a piece of artwork with a recycling theme. Students K-8th grade from Golden West, Brock Elliot, McParland, and Nile Garden were invited to submit artwork. Solid Waste staff promoted this art competition through classroom visits and assemblies where staff discussed the importance of recycling and encouraged every student to enter the art competition. To get students excited to participate in the competition, the Solid Waste mascot, Michael Recycle, or a garbage truck were brought out to the school. Student artwork was then placed in the hallway of the Manteca Senior Center to make a gallery wall where residents were able to come in to browse the art and cast a vote for their top 3 favorite art pieces. Voting was advertised to residents via social media and to City of Manteca employees through e-mail.

The top 12 winners will have their art placed in Solid Waste's first annual 2026 calendar which will be sent out to all Manteca residents. The student's artwork is promoting recycling and sustainability aligning with the recent expansion of City of Manteca's recycling program. All the winner's artwork will also be placed on the side of one of Solid Waste's garbage trucks. Winners will be honored at the November 18th City Council meeting where there will also be proclamation presented for America Recycles Day on that day.
