Approve a General Fund (Fund 100) appropriation to purchase a new towable drum wood chipper |
Recommendation:
title
Adopt a resolution approving a General Fund (Fund 100) appropriation of $120,000 to purchase a new towable drum wood chipper for the Public Works Parks Maintenance Division.
body
Background:
The Urban Forestry Crew in the Public Works Parks Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining roughly 16,000 (Sixteen Thousand) trees throughout the City of Manteca. The division is in need of a new wood chipper to perform work related to tree pruning and tree removals.
The Urban Forestry Crew is comprised of three (3) Urban Forestry Technicians, and one (1) Parks/Golf Maintenance Worker I position, as allocated in the current fiscal year 2025/26 budget to perform tree maintenance work. Currently only 1 of the Urban Forestry Technicians positions is filled, along with the one Maintenance Worker 1 position. Over the last several years, the City has unsuccessfully recruited to fill the vacant positions.
Staff is requesting the purchase of a new towable drum wood chipper that will only require a Class B Commercial Driver’s License instead of the current Class A requirement. This will allow the City to modify the Urban Forestry Technician job description and recruitment to industry standards and allow the department to more easily fill the vacant positions with qualified candidates.
Fiscal Impact:
Staff recommends approving a General Fund (Fund 100) appropriation of $120,000 for the new wood chipper. The purchase of the wood chipper is a one-time cost to the General Fund.
