Background:

At a recent City Council meeting there was a request for staff to review parking on Maple Ave, as well as adding an additional ADA stall. Staff previously reviewed parking and circulation on Maple in October 2010. Various options were considered including changing the direction of travel and restoring the street to two way travel. Multiple public meetings were held to gather input from the public. After consideration of the alternatives, minor changes were made to maximize the number of stalls, and allow left turns onto Yosemite, but the direction of travel remained the same.

More recently there has been a request for the City to consider developing parking controls and active management of parking in the downtown area, and adding an additional ADA stall. The purpose of the controls would be to limit parking to set times, preserve designated stalls for short term users or shoppers, and provide greater accessible parking opportunities downtown.

In response to the request for additional accessible parking City staff has already met downtown to analyze additional accessible parking opportunities. Unfortunately, due to the width of N. Maple Avenue, where the space was requested, the requirements of both the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the California Building Code related to accessible designs a viable location was not able to be located. However, the parking lot rehabilitation underway on the Maple Avenue will provide for three total accessible stalls along Maple Avenue. Two of these spaces are provided on the east side of the street and the other on the west providing compliant accessible parking in central locations.
